Dixon, Iowa At the Edge of Two Townships

A small Scott County city first platted in 1854, Dixon grew with the railroad and the grain trade, and still sits close to the woods and water of the Wapsipinicon River.

The Story

The village of Dixon was platted in April 1854. The 1882 History of Scott County says Jonathan Parker platted it for R. S. Dickenson, on the southeast quarter of section 12 in Liberty Township, and that later additions extended it into Allen's Grove Township. The town has kept that date: its written history was first prepared for the centennial in 1954 and expanded for the sesquicentennial in 2004.1, 2, 3

Growth was slow at first. The same county history says the village took on new life when the railroad was completed to the place in 1870, and dates the grain elevator to 1876, built by a stock company whose principal shares were taken by farmers in the community. By 1882 the state gazetteer placed Dixon in the northwest part of Scott County on the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul line, exporting hogs, cattle, and grain.1, 4, 5

Dixon was incorporated in 1909, one of seven small Scott County towns incorporated in the first decade of the twentieth century. The 1910 Census counted 198 people in the new city, split between its two townships: 113 in Allen Grove Township and 85 in Liberty Township. A little over a century later, the 2020 Census counted 202 people.3, 6, 7

Dixon remains one of Scott County's small cities. Scott County lists City Hall at 610 Davenport Street, and includes Dixon among the communities served by the Scott County Library System. Just outside town, at a Dixon address on 52nd Avenue, the county runs the Wapsi River Environmental Education Center along the Wapsipinicon River.8, 9, 10

The 1910 county history describes Dixon as the leading town in Allens Grove Township, on the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad twenty-two miles northwest of Davenport, with a graded school, a Christian church opposite the schoolhouse, a bank, hotels, stores, stock yards, and an elevator.5, 4
